In each monthly “Behind the Art,” I share a bit of detail about the process behind what I created. I think of it like a handwritten, backstage-pass to the art-creating process.

If you are curious about it, keep reading!

Backstory…

I was going to give away these two small bath tubs and a friend suggested I use them as planters. Not a bad idea! They already had drainage holes built in. So, I did. Instead of planting food in them, I thought they would be cute flower beds so I tried growing a packet of Dollar Store flowers from seed.

WOW. It took ALL SUMMER.

I finally got a bloom of the teensiest, tiniest, smidgen of a flower I have ever seen in my life.

And so I decided to paint them!

They had water on them at the time that I couldn't capture (well) on such a small piece. I think it would be a good challenge for me on a 8x10. Honestly, these flowers were so small that I could barely get the photo to focus.

I used a gray archival ink pen to sketch it and then filled in slowly with the lightest blues and purples

For a little challenge, I actually ended up drawing and painting it twice to see if I could get it a bit more “vibrant.”

Tell me what your preference is:

A quick dupe for more vibrant color
Painted on a postcard watercolor paper

Final painting on higher quality paper
Pastel version on a higher quality paper

One thing I love about watercolor is the way that colors just flow together with no rhyme or reason. And then eventually they settle where they want to be.

Can you guess which is my favorite? ;)

I hope you enjoyed this Behind the Art.
